The series has always been offline LAN, and it would not be anywhere as famous and popular as it was if it wasn't for that LAN that spread it like wildfire. No matter how you look at it, it is the developers responsibility to include basic offline LAN or user dedicated server capability in order to guarantee preservation. However, the truth is we have no idea what the community will look like in this hypothetical situation we speak of, nor do we know the limits or protections of the game that might prevent such projects. I agree with you that this one will likely see something like that, especially since the community has a fair amount of people who feel like me and want offline LAN. You are correct that games with dedicated communities are far more likely to see successful fan preservation, but it is far from a guaranteed. If it came to it, we would crowd source the funds and host servers ourselves so people could still play. Originally posted by DMg Halt:The community wouldn't let that happen, server shut downs. I repeat, either they need to add true offline LAN or they need to state clearly on their store page that their "LAN" requires an internet connection. Obviously their priority is profit over preservation. If the joiners can not see the lobby name e.g. STEP 2: One of you creates a lobby while the others join. STEP 1: DO NOT use Internet TCP/IP Instead Use Local (LAN) TCP/IP as demonstrated in the image below. I don't care how long it takes for servers to shut down, they will shut it down eventually when the game is no longer profitable to them. SOLUTION 1: LAN party creation explained based on my deep experience and knowledge. Many many games have seen this fate and it's nothing but sad. Making a multiplayer game dependent on online servers is a great way to kill multiplayer functionality once the official servers shut down. Multiplayer preservation is something that I am very passionate about. This is VERY basic functionality that they had no right to remove.

Me giving up and getting a refund does not solve the issue for future buyers who are interested in LAN play. I don't want a refund anyways, I want this amazing game to have the feature it deserves. Nope, I bought it while I was in town and played it for several hours, just to go home and find out that LAN requires an internet connection. Surely you were able to figure out that you can't play offline LAN before exceeding that threshold?

I agree with what you are saying but it doesn't justify this anti consumer practice, if no true LAN exists than they should give players access to their own dedicated servers for offline use. The game allows you to host "LAN" servers but only while connected to the internet. The first trailer even gushes over the LAN party legacy of it's predecessors, rubbing in your face what you cannot do in Definitive Edition. The store page lists it as a LAN game, so either they need to add LAN or fix their false advertisement. In HD, you'll always see games specifying in their game titles only EU or AUS/NZ players allowed. Is Age of Empires local multiplayer You will need an internet connection to set up the game. ' Click the 'Create' button to set up a new game for other players to join. It also allows you to play games with players on the opposite side of the world with little to no lag. In the main menu, click on 'Multiplayer.' Select 'Connection Type' on the right and select 'Local (LAN) TCP/IP Connection. It truly does have its advantages especially since this is an RTS game, having all players in the game in sync is essential for competitive gameplay. The one DE has is far superior (Dedicated servers) to HD (Peer to Peer). it's because they use two completely different methods to network their multiplayer. Unless you mean why does AoE2 HD have Offline LAN and AoE2 DE doesn't.
